'Why, I ask myself', Vincent Van Gogh once wrote, ‘shouldn't the shining dots of the sky be as accessible as the black dots on the map of France? Just as we take a train to reach Tarascon or Rouen, we take death to reach a star.' Vincent the legend, Van Gogh the star, furthermore the pastor's son and the one time Ramsgate school teacher, are surveyed by William Feaver whose (short) book on Van Gogh, though out of print, is available in the Royal Drawing School’s library. The first volume of his The Lives of Lucian Freud is due to appear in early autumn 2019.
