On drawing

Drawing is at the root of anything I make, whether in printmaking, painting or unique works on paper. For me, it is almost always the most direct way to think about something visually.

Printmaking is so often about delayed gratification. Often working in negative, working in reverse, separating out each colour one-by-one. Even though the compositions are still arrived at through a type of drawing, the medium always acts as an intermediary between the maker and the thing being made. This is something i enjoy - wrestling with a block of wood or a metal plate and compromising on an outcome - but then it can be such a relief to pick up an oil pastel and move instinctively across a sheet of paper. It's liberating to have that immediate connection with the materials and the way they turn into something new on the page.
