Eamonn McCabe

Biography

Eamonn McCabe is a freelance photographer and former awarding-winning picture editor of The Guardian newspaper in London. Eamonn got interested in photography through music during the period around 1967, when he was photographing bands such as Bad Company and The Who. His first job was with the physics department at Imperial College in London, photographing pieces of space rocket and the new intake of students. He covered the Los Angeles and Moscow Olympics just before experiencing the 1984 Heysel Stadium football disaster, which occurred in Belgium whilst shooting for the Observer. McCabe stayed at the Observer for nine years and then went on to be picture editor on The Guardian for 13 years. McCabe's awards include winning the 'Sports Photographer of the Year' four times between 1978 and 1984. Winning 'New Photographer of the Year' in 1985, and also 'Picture Editor of the Year' six times.
