New Young Artists Drawing Club – New Cumnock, East Ayrshire

July 19, 2019

We are pleased to announce a new Young Artists Drawing Club in New Cumnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland. Free to attend for all students, bookings are now open.

Starting in September 2019, this free Saturday morning drawing course for 10-14 year olds offers 16 students the opportunity to explore a variety of materials, themes and subject matter over the course of 10 weeks. The Club is designed as an introduction for children with an interest or aptitude in drawing who would like to develop their skills through sustained weekly tuition.

The course will be taught by Young Artists tutor, Gabrielle Lockwood Estrin, who graduated from the School’s postgraduate programme, The Drawing Year, in 2014 and is now a practising contemporary artist. She says -

I really enjoy working with young people through the Drawing Clubs. For me drawing is important as it gives us the space to become more aware of the situation we’re in, to notice the particularities of what is around us. I love the directness of drawing; we can react very quickly to our surroundings each in our own way. Through the process each person finds their own language to show how they interpret the world and their own personal feelings and thoughts about it. All of that becomes embedded into the work, where others are then able to see, so in that way it becomes a kind of communication tool too.

I want to challenge students by opening up thoughts and ideas about the complex nature of processing the world around us onto a two-dimensional page. Taking influence from different artists both historically and currently, I hope that students will be inspired and excited by the challenge of trying out different ideas of what drawing can be.

The course will take place in New Cumnock Town Hall which was brought back to life in 2016 as a result of a nine-month restoration project directed by HRH The Prince of Wales. For years the Town Hall had lain derelict and there were plans to tear down the building to make way for a car park. The Hall is now the home of many community activities and we hope this new Drawing Club will be a colourful and creative new addition to the already thriving programme of events.
