How do I apply to The Foundation Year?
The first step is to complete the online application and digital portfolio submission once applications open. Applications will close on Monday 17 February 2020 at 5pm.
If you study in the boroughs of Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Havering, Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham or Waltham Forest you are exempt from the £10 application fee.

to complete a drawing exercise set by the Foundation Year Course Leaders which
should be posted to the School.

Digital Portfolio Submission
In your digital portfolio you will need to
upload 20 high resolution JPG or PNG photographs of your work. The works will
- 10 drawings in dry media (e.g.
graphite, charcoal, chalk, pastel, Conté)
- 10 additional works in other media (e.g. painting, photography, sculpture, animation*, print)
Within the 20 image limit, you may include images from sketchbook pages, however if possible, please try to limit this to 5 images.
*Animators may submit 2 short video files included within their additional works. Please limit each video file to 2 minutes / max 8MB per video.
Images should be saved as JPG or PNG files, no larger than 200dpi / 4MB per image. These works must have been created within the past three years.
Images files must be labelled in the following way:
Title of Work_Dimensions_Medium.jpeg
i.e. Untitled_25x25_CharcoalOnPaper.jpeg (dimensions should be calculated in centimetres)
Please be prepared to bring these works along with further sketchbooks to the interview if you are shortlisted.
Details of the drawing exercise will be emailed to applicants once applications have closed. Applicants will have approx a week to complete a 3 hour drawing exercise which will form part of your portfolio. This drawing exercise needs to be submitted by post to arrive no later than midday on Wednesday 26 February. Drawings are to be sent flat in an A3 envelope. Please do not send rolled drawings. If you are unsuccessful in your application, please be aware that we will not be able to post your drawing exercise back to you.
Applicants will be shortlisted by our assessment panel and selected candidates will be invited to attend an interview in London on either Monday 30 March, Tuesday 31 March or Wednesday 1 April 2020. They will bring a physical portfolio of their work including the images from the digital submission, and sketchbooks. We understand that some international candidates might not be able to attend an interview in person, in which case we are able to offer Skype interviews. We are unable to offer a place to any candidate who does not attend an interview on the designated interview dates.
