Spring Term FAQs
All students will receive a fact-sheet prior to the start of the course to let them know what to expect, including information specific to each course.
Q. What can I expect when I arrive at the studios?
There will be new social distancing measures put in place for the safety of all and we need your help to keep our studios a safe environment for creativity. Please see below information about the new measures:
Arriving at Charlotte Road:
We are implementing staggered entrance times for students on different courses, into the building. Your entrance time will depend on the start time of your course, so this will be specified on your fact sheet. If you arrive before the specified time, you will need to queue outside the door, where there will be markers 2m apart helping students to socially distance.
Please e-mail email@example.com or call 020 7613 8568 in advance if you are unable to attend class or know that you will be delayed.
Students must wear a mask when entering the building. Once inside you will need to check in with the receptionist, who will tick you in on the course register. You will then be allowed up to the studios.
Hand sanitiser will be provided at reception, on every floor and in the studios.
The lift will only be available for use by those who are disabled. The lift will only be able to accommodate one person at a time, so we implore students to only use it if they cannot use the stairs. Please be aware that there may be a queue for the lift. We welcome you to let us know in advance if you will need to use the lift, as this will help us to organise arrival times and reduce queuing.
One-Way Stairwell System:
There will be a one-way system in place to aid distanced movement around the building. If you are familiar with the building, this means that the main wooden stairwell will be used for people going up-only, and the back concrete stairs will be used for people going down.
Q. How will the studios be set-up to enable social distancing?
Easels, drawing boards, and 1 x pack of charcoal are provided for free in the studios. The Studios will be set-up with social distancing measures in place to help keep students, models, tutors and staff safe. Class sizes have been significantly reduced, and easels will already be set out in the studios with drawing boards on them, to ensure students are 2m apart.
There will be a queuing system in place for use of the loos as well as the washing-up butler sink. Students will be asked to use this sink area only one at a time.
A full health and safety talk is given at the start of each course but please be aware that we have a strict no phone and no photography policy within our studios. Sharp blades such as stanley knives, swiss pocket knives and other carving tools are also not permitted in the studios.
Q. Will there still be materials provided in the studios?
Due to social distancing measures, we are only able to provide limited materials this term, with no communal or shared materials.
At the start of the course you will receive 1 x pack of charcoal to keep for yourself throughout the course.
There will be newsprint, Snowdon cartridge, and some watercolour paper in the studios. You are welcome to bring alternative types of paper along with you.
Paper Stations will be set up around the studios to make accessibility easier (we will have disposable gloves available for students to use when picking paper). The Plan Chests will not be available for use this term.
Q. Will I need to wear a mask?
Please wear your mask when moving around the building and the studios (including when going to the toilet/butler sink). You are welcome to take this off when drawing at your easel. However, if a tutor comes to talk to you please put your mask on again. The tutor will wear a mask as well, as they are going around.
The model will not be wearing a mask while posing. When the model is going on their break, they will wear a mask when going towards the model area. For the safety of the models, the model area will only be used by them, no students or staff are allowed.
Q. Is there somewhere for me to eat lunch if the ground floor foyer is out of use?
Please note that there will be a one-hour lunch break generally between 1-2pm each day and regular breaks throughout the day. Students can go out for lunch where there are lots of cafés, restaurants, and shops in the nearby area or you are welcome to eat a packed lunch in the studios at your easel. Remember to check in with the receptionist so they can tick you in and out if you leave at any point. Students will still need to socially distance in the studios while eating lunches and will be responsible for cleaning up their food waste. The downstairs foyer will no longer be available as a communal area.
There will be water stations with access to hot and cold water. Please bring your own reusable cups or water bottles, as disposable cups will not be available.
Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any further questions.
