Drawing, Collage and Poetry

Look around! This world is built of layer upon layer of coloured paper, torn at the edges. Juxtapositions of nature and the mechanical appear every time the wind turns the leaves over, poetry green to greyish underside, in front of a hoarding whose foot-high letters advertise prosaic uniformity. Collage is a mirror to the transience of images in these hurtling times. It can release the eyes from the tyranny of the static, allowing for radical experiments in looking. In collage, chance and mistake are vital parts of the sticking process, and poetry can be found freely in what turns up, from dry journals rearranged, to scraps of old notebooks. Everything is fair game for the inventive scissors of the mind. So, look sharp!

On this course we will work from poetry, from observation of objects and life around you, and imagination. We will look at how very many inspiring artists have used collage. We will have the chance to collaborate with poets of the past, our homes, and we will find ways to lend even the most passive sheets of paper some of the restless energy of our own inner and outer built up areas.
