Drawing Space: Interior & Exterior 1

This course looks at the challenge of making drawings of private spaces around you as well as learning from large public spaces without being in or having access. Rotating between two tutors on alternate weeks; Jeanette will explore interiors with exercises from students’ observed space, imagination, whilst referencing images of busy interiors such as a Grand Central Station New York and Kings Cross London. They will also look at how artists have approached architectural themes. Combining a range of sketches, compositional strategies will be explored, these will be worked into one or more sustained drawings made in the students own time. In alternate sessions with Martin, students will initially be introduced to perspective and the use of freehand geometry to construct space in a picture and architectural form. Measurement and the formal problems of keeping a larger view coherent will also be explored. There will be a series of exercises aimed at developing this capacity including making a drawing either of their location or the view from it.

Our new five-week courses give you the flexibility and choice to build your term as you like it, offering the opportunity to try out more courses than you would be able to with our usual programme. However if you prefer the longer format of a ten-week course, you can book the same five-week course twice, knowing that the courses will not follow the same structure in the first and second half of term, and tutors are able to adapt and tailor the course to each student based on whether you are taking it for the first time or are continuing on from the first half of the term.
