Drawing Topographies: Internal and External

In this course we aim to explore the meaning of subconscious topographies through the observational drawing of the internal and external spaces that surround us. We will convert what we see into unexpected new realities that reflect our inner state of being. Alternating between outdoor and interior subjects, as well as subject and studio working scenarios, students will build confidence to create connections and experiential responses to the local environment through observation, memory and imagination. We will work sequentially, combining our fragmented experiences as a journey, examine the fixed position and first-person view, as well as experiment with multiple viewpoints to distil a sense of place. To inform and enrich our responses, we will be looking at extracts of text from the influential works of Sigmund Freud that inspired the original surrealist manifesto in 1924. We will see how we respond to and challenge those ideas in our contemporary reality. We will learn about the techniques of stream-of-consciousness drawing by studying compositions from Max Ernst, Magritte, Remedios Varo, Dorothea Tanning, Leonora Carrington and Wilfredo Lam, to name a few, as well as making our own drawings from poetry, film and theories of psychoanalysis. We will be looking at surrealism's legacy in the work of contemporary international artists and creating new work that converts the mundane everyday realities of our lockdown landscapes into new revealing visions.
