Experimental Printmaking in the Life Room
This course offers the rare opportunity of studying the life model while exploring the rich diversity of the printmaking medium. An active dialogue between drawing and printmaking will be encouraged as the group responds directly to the subject through a wide range of intaglio, relief, stencilling and monoprint processes. Through proofing, re-printing and layering, your prints will evolve as you improvise, experiment and adapt to the technical challenges of the printing methods. The challenges of the processes compel us to be more perceptive regarding the representation of the human figure, and we will look at the relationship between composition and scale, structure and space, character and atmosphere, tone and colour. Practical demonstrations will take place in each session in traditional methods as well as more improvised approaches to printmaking. The high tutor/student ratio will allow each student to go on their own journey and incorporate these approaches in the way that best suits their work. As the course progresses, students may want to get increasingly ambitious with scale, composition, layering and colour.
We will employ a range of materials, from metal etching plates, plywood and linoleum, to ad hoc alternatives that could lead to surprising results. We will use a printing press as well as hand-printing methods that can be applied to your home or studio practice. This course is suitable for beginners and those with more experience alike. It is ideal for those looking to expand their life-drawing practice into further mediums.
Free charcoal, newsprint and masking tape are provided in the Studios. There is an added fee for the use of specialist print paper and materials throughout the course.
