Drawing outside can be more than an end in itself. Pierre Bonnard used small outdoor drawings as the source for his colourful ambitious paintings. This course is an opportunity to explore and respond to the rich variety of urban landscape immediately around Shoreditch - from the canal to Brick Lane or Hoxton Square to Liverpool Street, there is a wealth of imagery from different cultures and times within walking distance of the School. Using the drawings made on location as a starting point, students will then return to the studio to develop more ambitious, larger drawings. As students to and fro between outside and inside a dialogue between the two approaches will emerge. The character of the outdoor drawing will be determined by the kind of raw material required in the studio. This may include written notes or omit things that can be remembered. Limitations on size, materials and time won’t apply in the studio where the tyranny of the subject will also lose its grip as the cityscape becomes remembered and reinvented. We will consider artists such as Leon Kossof and Frank Auerbach whose London drawings were the foundations of much of their work, as well as Burra’s paintings of cafés and bars, Hopper, the Ashcan painters, Groz, Kirchner, Dix, Manet, Sickert, Jacob Lawrence, Immendorf and Jockum Nordstorm.

The class size will be limited to enable students to work on large drawings in the studio should they wish to.
