Exploring Drawings Through Print (4 Weeks)

This course is aimed to familiarise the student with a number of print techniques that can be done at home with simple materials. Embracing a process that balances control with the unexpected, chance and accident to reveal a unique image, can inform and surprise us. We will work with reductive, additive, direct and stencil mono print methods in addition to dry point. Varying materials such as oil pastel, paint, chalk, watercolour and improvisation with other items around us will offer diverse qualities. One may gravitate more towards one process or incorporate a few, collaging and layering their print. Drawing and painting on top of the print may also allow us the liberty to pursue and work with ideas, pushing the image further. Using the methods as a way to explore pictorial and expressive concerns, the print can be seen as an end in itself or as a means to an end. There will be the chance to work both from preliminary drawings and directly into print. Over the four weeks it is hoped that students will be able to compile a small body of work that shows an individual investigation.
