Printmaking at Home: Wood-cut, Lino-cut and Monotype
This course will allow you to explore the potential of printmaking from your own home. Printmakers have always been resourceful. Whether we are using the bitumen designed for laying roads, linoleum designed for flooring or photo-emulsion designed for circuit boards, we have always adapted to the circumstances and technologies of our time to make art. This course will focus on monotype, and relief printing using linoleum and wood. You will be given the chance to explore layering of colour in monotypes and relief through the ‘reduction-cut’ and multiple-block printing processes. We will be using oil-based but water-soluble inks, allowing for high quality results while remaining solvent-free and green. For inspiration, we will be drawing from a rich history of relief printmaking from Hokusai and Dürer up to ambitious contemporary works by Christianne Baumgartner and Grayson Perry. There will be opportunities for tutor demonstrations, group discussion/enquiry, one-on-one tutorials and ‘breakout rooms’, in which students will be connected in mini-groups for activities and critiques. Suitable for experienced printmakers and beginners alike.
