Satire and Sacred in Art
Perhaps nothing throws up a greater yearning for laughter and prayer in art than national crisis and Britain has endured many. Luckily by temperament or circumstance there has been no shortage of British artists who have been prepared to humorously lance the boil of hypocrisy, and visionaries to point to an alternative devotional way. This course will examine these two strands of satire and the sacred which are integral to our culture, seemingly opposite yet closely related. Working from the collections of Tate Britain, the British Museum, the V&A and venues as varied as Westminster Abbey and street markets, we will explore the attraction of vice and piety to artists. The satirists range from Hogarth, Gillray, Rowlandson, Burra, Rose Wylie. The sacred realm spans the Medieval to Blake, Spencer and Cecil Collins. On both sides of the debate unorthodox, surprising voices have made crucial contributions to the art of these islands. This will be a rich blend of two deep veins of cultural discourse.
