Summer School // Mindfulness and Drawing

When you're in the studio painting, there are a lot of people in there with you - your teachers, friends, painters from history, critics... and one by one if you're really painting, they walk out. And if you're really painting YOU walk out.” -  Philip Guston

Both drawing and mindfulness invite us to let go of thoughts as they arise and come back to the present moment - to that which is happening in and around us. On this 5-day intensive, we will teach you to use mindfulness to develop and deepen the creative process of seeing and drawing. Each class will include guided meditations throughout the day, which will begin as short sittings (5-10 minutes) and develop into longer ones as the week progresses. Each class will explore a different subject (self-portraiture, personal objects and our immediate environment) and we will explore different ways of using our attention, with the aim of developing a more intimate relationship with the subject, the drawing and ourselves. We use mindfulness to see outside and inside of ourselves better, removing barriers to our creativity and even dissolving the distinction between the drawer and the drawn.
