Summer School // Painting a Head

For over 2000 years the depiction of the human face has challenged artists. Over five days this course will offer students the chance to make sustained paintings over two and three day poses, encouraging them to respond to how the model’s head relates to their surroundings. Emphasis will be placed on colour mixing and understanding tonal relationships. Examples from the art of the past to be studied include Helene Schjerfbeck and Alice Neel, as well as earlier artists such as El Greco and Goya; one-to-one teaching and group discussions will take place throughout each day. Suitable for all levels.
