Summer School // Painting: Portraits and Self-Portraits

Within this course we will think about how we can represent our own reality working both from the mirror image, the model and our imagination.   Drawing on our experiences during these extraordinary few months we will try to create self-portraits which reflect on experiences of isolation and confinement and between drawing ourselves and others, narrative biography and autobiography will come into play.  We will discuss how others have approached portraits and self-portraits by looking at artists including Paula Modersohn-Becker, Edvard Munch, Max Beckmann, Paula Rego, Rembrandt, Stanley Spencer, Lucian Freud.

During the week we will use the model and mirror to explore composition, multiple characters and pose, as well as experimenting with approaches to both drawing and painting portraits of others and portraits of ourselves. We will think about bringing the kind of urgency we might naturally use in the self-portrait to the formal portraying of someone else to further the mystery. Suitable for beginners.
