Young Artists Easter Holiday Course Aged 11-15
Cabinet of Curiosities
In the 17th century French Academy of Art ‘Hierarchy of Genres’, the still life was ranked bottom; considered lowly because it did not involve human subject matter. In this course, students will experience creating still lifes first-hand. By using new materials to explore the way food feels in your hands; using writing to explore stories associated with treasured objects and by creating dioramas to investigate natural objects, students will have the opportunity to learn that the still life does, in fact, involve a human subject matter – themselves. Including a visit to the Horniman Museum, students will accumulate a mixed-media portfolio of still life work, having had an in-depth look into the very many things that genre has to offer.
