Portfolio Preparation

An intensive course for young artists aged 16-19, thinking about heading to art school. The course focuses on observational drawing with an emphasis on developing students’ skills and abilities to prepare a portfolio for Foundation or Degree application. Individual guidance is given on art school applications, personal statements and portfolio preparation, alongside discussion and group critiques giving each young person an experience of art school.

Tuition comes from the Royal Drawing School’s distinguished faculty who teach on the Schools Fine Art Foundation course, The Foundation Year. During the 5-day week students will draw and paint looking at line, tone, colour and composition. They will be encouraged to experiment with different media, trying out new techniques and developing new skills.

The week begins with drawing and painting from life, where students will work from their own personal still life set up. They will experiment with mark making, scale, colour mixing, painting techniques and composition and this sustained concentration on one subject will provide intensive studies.

The week continues with the moving image; bringing imagination and movement to observational drawing. including a panoramic drawing workshop and an introduction to narrative in landscape drawing using a concertina book format. Students will visit leading online galleries to draw from the collections and installations. Days will end with a detailed critique and students will start to gain a good grounding in art history and contemporary practice that can be developing into statement writing for applications.

All students will conclude the week by taking part in a final group crit allowing work made over the week to be discussed and analysed.  Students will have individual advice sessions on art school applications, including portfolio preparation and personal statements.
