Young Artists Portfolio Preparation Course (aged 15 -18 years)

Portfolio Prep for Higher Education and Creative Careers

This two-week intensive course is for Young Artists aged 15-18 who are considering applying to art school or working in the arts sector. The portfolio is an essential part of all applications to degrees and careers in the creative industries, from Fine Art, Graphic Design and Illustration to Filmmaking, Animation and Architecture.

This course will focus on observational drawing to develop students’ creative process, problem solving, idea generation, research skills, contextual knowledge and self-expression.

As well as encouraging discussion and group critique, each student will have a taste of the authentic art school experience. They will be encouraged to create drawings with extensive media, try experimental techniques and develop research skills to bridge the gap between school/college and university this summer.

Students will receive bespoke guidance on art school applications, with advice on what makes a standout personal statement and what to include in portfolio preparation, tailored to the unique requirements of each individual.

Week 1: Drawing in the Studio and Contextual Studies:

This week students focus on developing seeing and thinking skills through drawing from observation. Students will experiment with mark making, scale, tone, composition, and colour mixing. These intensive sessions will include drawing from the model, interesting studio sets, and drawing outside, using the world around them as a resource for ideas and inspiration.

Students will visit leading London galleries to draw from the collections and installations each day, ending with a detailed critique. Students will start to gain a good grounding in art history and contemporary practice and develop confidence in the analysis of visual imagery. Research carried out in Week 1 will inform Week 2.

Week 2: Practice:

Back in the studio, project-based learning will be used to explore the practice of art and design. Introducing narrative, environment, print, moving image, construction, imagination and movement to find the edge of observational drawing. All students will conclude the week by taking part in a final group crit, allowing work made over the week to be discussed and analysed.  Students will receive individual feedback, advice on art school applications, including portfolio preparation, and personal statement reviews.
