Young Artists Summer Holiday // London Street Scene (10 - 14 years)

London Street Scene: Theatre in the Studio

Combining observation, imagination and storytelling, this 5-day course is an opportunity for students to develop their skills and confidence in drawing. Over the week we will draw outside in the surrounding area, take a trip to the V&A museum, work from a model, and make a collaborative ‘theatre set’ in the studio.

Taking our cue from artists such as Masaccio and Piero Della Francesca, James Ensor and Edward Burra, we will gather elements from the street (people, pigeons, bikes, buses, trees, buildings) which we will use to develop into cardboard scenery back in the studio. This collaborative ‘set’ will become the basis for an ambitious series of drawings involving a clothed model.

This is a course that will develop students’ ability to invent and extrapolate from close looking; introduce them to a range of different artists; and will involve working both individually and as a group.

Students will:

  • Develop their skills in observational drawing – people, objects, buildings.
  • Try new materials.
  • Working on a large scale.
  • Develop skills in collaboration and teamwork.
  • Work between imagination and observation.
  • Build confidence in drawing outside and in public places.
  • Explore sequence, movement and narrative.
  • Join a small group of likeminded artistic students.
  • Benefit from one-to-one tuition.
