Biography

Jennifer McRae graduated from Gray's School of Art, Robert Gordon's University and works as a full time painter in Edinburgh. She has exhibited work in the UK, USA and Europe. In 2014 she won the Ondaatje Gold Medal in the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and has been a Royal Scottish Academician since 2011. She is represented by the Thackeray Gallery in London and Bourne Fine Art in Edinburgh.

On drawing

Drawing to me forms the skeleton of a painting, the bare bones of studio practise and fundamental to observation. I’ve never separated drawing from painting; they converge on the canvas and a drawn pencil line left to its devices can speak with as much volume as an intense brushstroke of paint.
