Young Artists Summer Holiday Explore | Art and Nature (15 - 18 years)

Art and Nature: from the Museum to the Studio

Inspired by the collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum this course will offer Young Artists the opportunity to draw from its world renowned collection and develop their drawing practice in our Shoreditch Studios.

Our starting point is excellence in design and craftsmanship displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Young Artists will start by considering patterns that incorporate drawings of animals and plants. The museum offers inspiring, recurring themes of portraiture, nature and the animal world in a huge variety of materials. Materials range from tapestry to stained glass, carving and inlay, and metal to precious stones.

Drawing in the V&A museum, students will gain a deep understanding of approaches to drawing, pattern and colour, as well as image making across the whole world. We will consider how these designs are rooted in a response to nature. Art historical context will also be provided in an accessible manner.

In the studio, drawing from a clothed life model and other sources of inspiration relating to animals and plants, students will work towards a final piece to take home that incorporates the figure and/or plants and animals. This will incorporate drawn and sculptural elements from paper, card, and other materials. Each student will be given personal guidance in developing their final piece and will be encouraged to follow what inspired them most during the course.

This 5 day course will see students drawing in the Victoria & Albert museum for two days, and in the studio in Shoreditch for three.

A full schedule will be provided in advance.
