Young Associates: Galleries and Museums Aged 15 - 18
Visiting museums, engaging with cultural spaces, and drawing in galleries is an integral part of the artistic experience. This course is designed to give young artists the opportunity to develop a regular “out of the studio” drawing practice. This course will encourage students to consistently engage with, reflect upon, and find inspiration in spaces outside the studio.
Young Associates, Galleries and Museums is open to students aged 15 - 18 (in school years 10 – 13) who have a passion for drawing and a desire to improve their skills through exploring a range of traditional and contemporary gallery and museum spaces in Central London.
During this course young artists will be exposed to a wide range of artistic techniques, styles, and perspectives essential for developing their personal drawing practice. They will also develop their critical thinking skills and general knowledge of the arts landscape. Students will study from a wide range of resources including drawing, sculpture, painting, architecture, and historical collections. They will engage with works through drawing and discussion to broaden their contextual knowledge whilst making images.
Taught by professional practicing artists, the weekly class will lead students through a range of observational drawing exercises to create a portfolio of high-quality work and a regular sketchbook practice.
Each week the group will meet at a new location. The schedule will likely include the V&A museum, the Wallace Collection, Tate Modern, The National Gallery, and the British Museum. Additionally, a selection of contemporary spaces such as Hauser & Wirth, Victoria Miro, Serpentine Gallery, and Gagosian will be included according to the exhibition programmes. Students will also have the opportunity to explore the practice of drawing outside with visits to London’s various parks and outdoor spaces.
Students will be able to familiarise themselves with a good range of institutions, broaden their knowledge, and draw as a small group in these exciting locations.
- All materials for classes are supplied.
- All locations will be in Zones 1 and 2.
- A full schedule will be issued in advance.
