Charles Hewlings

Biography

The painter Gina Medcalf and the sculptor Charles Hewlings live and work together in South London. Hewlings, who trained at Newcastle and St Martins, emerged as a leading sculptor in the late 1970s, has taught at Wimbledon and the RCA and spent two years in Duisberg on a Lehmbruck scholarship. Medcalf was trained at the Central and spent 15 years in New York working mainly on photography (receiving a National Endowment For the Arts award). Her paintings have been exhibited at John Moores’ and in Flowers’ Survey of British Abstract Painting. Both artists share a thoughtful commitment to abstraction and spoke about drawing in relation to that tradition.
