I’ve always had a painting and drawing practice, but I realised I needed to build my life around my practice, rather than fit it around my life. The Drawing Year has given me time to do this. Time is a kind of space. I’ve been able to move with the slippery fugitive of time whilst on the course and it’s been transformative to my life. As Caleb Azumah Nelson said, “There’s a difference between being looked at and being seen,” and the most fundamental change to my work has been really seeing - what I’m researching, what I’m interested in – my subject matter - and ultimately what I’m drawing.

The community of my classmates has been another source of joy and a major factor in pushing my work on. I’m excited to be showing with such an exciting group of artists at Christies, at Royal Drawing School and in our open studios later this year. I’m applying for residencies and will get a studio with some buddies from the year so that I can continue to focus on making work when I leave the School.
