Drawing London: Past and Present 

As you walk around London, you will walk where others have walked for hundreds of years. How would they have seen what you see? Through drawing and storytelling we can picture what that might have looked like.

This course will focus on imagination and observation, moving between the studio and the streets and green spaces of London. Using the local history, poetry and prose, examples of artwork made in each area and the influences that inspired them, we will explore different areas of the city and contrast how places look today, with how they looked in the past.

Students will be inspired by the work of John Minton and his depictions the Thames, Leon Kossoff and his drawings of Arnold Circus, French situationists and Dérives.

• Experience of drawing in public spaces.
• An introduction to some of London’s history through art.
• Drawing skills and strategies that can be used to deepen our experience of a place.
• Observational drawing skills.
• Exploring how to capture the movement of the city.
• Challenged to work outside of your comfort zone.

This course is based out of house and you will visit a different venue or space each day. There will also be an opportunity to work in house on one or two days in the studio at the Royal Drawing School.

All locations will be in zones 1 and 2 and a full schedule will be issued in advance.
