Sam is a printmaker and painter based in London. She studied at Central St Martins School of Art, the Slade School of Fine Art and on The Drawing Year at The Prince's Drawing School (now the Royal Drawing School). Her work is shown nationally and internationally and she recently exhibited work at Art Athina in Athens and at Bankside Gallery in London. She takes her inspiration from her everyday life, animals and landscapes, often combining them all together. Sam's starting point is always drawings done from observation. She works within all forms of printmaking, but specialises in etching. She has a PGCE from the Institute of Education and teaches on the Royal Drawing School's Foundation Year and Drawing School Central, at the BRIT School and the Working Men’s College and runs art workshops at the Queen’s Gallery.
On drawing
For me drawing is where it all starts, the foundation of all my work. My drawings are a way of working through something, finding my way with what I’m trying to do. They are a way of thinking. Sometimes I sit down with no idea at all and start drawing – at times I get nowhere so I put the drawing down and have a cup of tea – but other times I see something in the scribbling, an idea emerges and I have my lead.
