Dumfries House Applications (RDS Applicants)

Who can apply?

The residency opportunity is open to Drawing Year alumni, Online Drawing Development Year graduates, faculty of the Royal Drawing School, Scottish Artists, US Artists from partner schools, and to applicants nominated via partner organisations. US applicants please read Dumfries House Applications (US Applicants) before applying. Scottish Artists please read Dumfries House Applications (Scottish Artists) before applying. 

Applications for the Dumfries House Residency for Royal Drawing School Alumni are now closed. Application will open again in spring 2023 for the July – December 2023 session. 

All other artists will be contacted directly by partner organisations to apply for the residency. RDS applications are open to Drawing Year alumni, Online Drawing Development Year graduates and faculty of the Royal Drawing School only. Please do not apply if you are not eligible, as your application will not be considered. 

The Royal Drawing School has recently opened a new printmaking studio at Dumfries House. The new studio offers etching facilities for artists in residence. The printmaking residency programme is currently being finalised, if you are interested in a printmaking residency, please note this in your application. Please note the printmaking residencies are currently only open to artists proficient in printmaking.

Please note applications are currently closed for Scotland Artists at Dumfries House and international applicants.


Residency terms:

Artists will be provided with a studio and self-catering accommodation. Artists are expected to be self-sufficient for the duration of their stay and will need to cover all other costs including travel, food, and materials. 

The residency is intended to be a productive and creative period for artists to be able to work in a peaceful environment, whilst enjoying Dumfries House, its grounds and the surrounding countryside. 

Visas are the international artist's own responsibility.
